PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for detecting an abnormal electrode by relative evaluation in electrolytic smelting capable of executing detection at a low cost and eliminating a decision error by the fluctuation, etc., of an electric current (voltage). ;SOLUTION: This method for detecting the abnormal electrode by the relative evaluation in electrolytic smelting specifies and detects the abnormal position of electrode plates by alternately immersing many cathode plates K on the cathode side of conductors fixed atop both opposite side walls of an electrolytic cell 30 in which an electrolyte is stored and anode plates A on an anode side, respectively in the state of conductively supporting these plates and simultaneously measuring the magnetism near the contacts of the conductors and the plural cathode plates and/or near the contacts of the conductors and the plural anode plates by many magnetic sensors.
