PURPOSE: To obtain a catalyst having high activity in aldol condensation by mixing pseudo boehmite with an acid soln., adding magnesium oxide and carrying out agitation, drying and calcining. CONSTITUTION: Pseudo boehmite is mixed with a water-soluble acid such as nitric acid to prepare a dispersion of pseudo boehmite crystals. Magnesium oxide is then added to the pseudo boehmite slurry in an Mg to Al ratio of about 1:1 to about 10:1, preferably about 2:1 to about 3:1. The mixture is agitated for about 5 hr, dried and calcined at about 300-500 deg.C for about 1-24 hr. The resultant catalyst performs aldol condensation with good reactivity and can prepare mesityl oxide or isophorone from acetone.
