PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To efficiently reduce sludge of a waste water treatment equipment by bringing tea leaves into contact with biomass such as activated sludge or digested sludge in the waste water treatment equipment. SOLUTION: Many substances having pharmacological action such as amino acids, vitamins, caffein, tannin or the like are present in tea leaves widely used in health drinking water. By bringing tea leaves having these characteristics or the exudate thereof into contact with biomass, sludge is reduced without exerting any adverse effect on the treatment function of a waste water treatment equipment. At this time, 10wt.% of tea leaves are pref. set to a size passing a 10-mesh screen. In sludge reducing treatment, tea leaves are treated so that one or more kind of biologically active component selected from among amino acids, vitamains, proteins and sugars contained in tea leaves and one or more kind of a sludge soluble component selected from among various polyphenol compds. such as tannin, saponin or the like contained in tea leaves are pref. brought into contact with biomass.
