PURPOSE: To obtain the subject new liquid crystal compound, useful as a diluent for liquid crystal compounds assuming three stable states and capable of assuming smectic phase itself. ;CONSTITUTION: The objective compound expressed by the formula (R₁ and R₂ are 3-20C alkyl; X is (C=O) O, CO, O or single bond), e.g. 4-n- nonyloxycarbonylphenyl 4'-n-decyloxynbiphenyl-4-carboxylate. The compound expressed by the formula in which X is O is obtained by subjecting 4- hydroxybenzoic acid and an alkyl alcohol to esterifying reaction in the presence of sulfuric acid catalyst and reacting the resultant alkyl-4-hydroxybenzoic acid with a 4'-alkyloxybiphenyl-4-carboxylic acid chloride.;COPYRIGHT: (C)1993,JPO&Japio
