PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain the subject squalane derived from animal oil and fat, scarcely containing pristane amount, consequently almost free from irritation to skin and scarcely causing deterioration due to light and heat by keeping pristane amount in squalane to a specific amount or below. ;SOLUTION: An amount of pristane contained in squalane derived from animal oil and fat is suppressed to ≤10 ppm, preferably ≤5 ppm, especially kept so that pristane is not substantially detected to provide the objective squalane. The squalane can be obtained by hydrogenating squalane collected from shark liver oil which is animal oil and fat of deep-sea shark such as Centrophorus atromarginatus Garman, Deania eglantina Jordan & Snyder, Centroscyllium ritteri and 'Shiratsubozame' and then, reducing an amount of pristane by thin film distillation. The squalane is preferably used as a medicine, a cosmetic or a raw material therefor. The squalane is especially suitable as a raw material for cosmetics, medicines, etc., which may bring into contact with skin.;COPYRIGHT: (C)1999,JPO
