Signals to be processed, for example digitised audio signals, frequently occur in a regular sequence of data words, which are processed for example in a signal processor, successive data words being processed with the same programme. However, this programme generally does not need the full time between two successive data words, so that the remaining time can be used for the processing of further data words which are not time-critical. However, this remaining time is generally too short for the complete processing of such further data words. In order to create a continuous longer processing block for such further data words, the invention proposes that at least one of the regularly occurring data words be buffer-stored and processing carried out in immediate succession and that the time differences between the processing times of one of these data words and their period length be accumulated, until at the end of such processing no new data word is stored. …IMAGE…
