PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To remove impurities from indene in a simple way and to obtain high purity indene by applying a crystallization method to indene stock oil. ;SOLUTION: This method is to remove impurities (e.g. indan, benzonitrile, aliphatic hydrocarbons and/or C4-alkylbenzenes) from indene stock oil concentrated through the distillation of a coal-tar fraction and/or a petroleum distillate by a crystallization method preferably at -10 to 0°C. Removal of the impurities are preferably conducted through solid-liquid separation by centrifugation set at -10 to 0°C. For example, the stock oil is cooled down to a lower temperature than -10°C to solidify the stock oil and crushed matter prepared by crushing the solid matter is subjected to solid-liquid separation by a centrifuge set at -10 to 0°C. Filtrate obtained by the solid-liquid separation can be recycled as a raw material for indene stock liquid.
