PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a portable route guidance device and a method for return route guidance capable of simply performing return route guidance so that return to the starting place is made by following the outward trip route backward whatever the outward trip route may be.;SOLUTION: In a route memory mode, nodes (corners) are automatically detected. Each time a node is detected, the number of the node, the coordinates of the node, and the like are stored in order in a route table (S0 to S3). When operation is made to start return route guidance (S4), a return route is displayed by using, as a returning position, the position where the return route guidance operation is made (S5, S6). GPS data is received to measure present positions (S7) and guidance is displayed (S8). The deviation of each present position from the return route is calculated (S9).
