PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for determining a rotational position of a magnetic storage medium divided into plural servo sections with high reliability and low overhead. ;SOLUTION: A prescribed bit pattern is determined according to the known position of a magnetic storage medium 50. Rotational position indicator bits are made to be related to each servo sector 30 so that the known bits of the prescribed bit pattern are related to the known positions of the magnetic storage medium 50. The present rotational position indicator bits are read from the magnetic storage medium 50, and a rotational position bit sequence including the present rotational position indicator bits is formed. The rotational position bit sequence is compared with the prescribed bit pattern, and it is decided whether or not the rotational position of the magnetic media 50 is the known rotational position based on the comparison.;COPYRIGHT: (C)2001,JPO
