PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a negative material employed in the negative electrode having a higher charge/discharge capacity, a higher charge/discharge efficiency, flatness of discharge curve, and a good cycling property between charge and discharge. SOLUTION: A lithium secondary battery comprises a carbon material capable of occluding and releasing lithium free and an amorphous metal compound containing metal capable of alloying with lithium, whereby at least part of the surface of the carbon material is coated with the amorphous metal compound.
