PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method of surface treatment for a stainless steel by which an oxide composed essentially of Cr on any surface of a stainless steel can be formed, with respect to the formation of a passivation film minimal in the release of water from the surface of a stainless steel and capable of desorption of adsorbed water in an extremely short time, and the stainless steel.;SOLUTION: In this method of surface treatment for a stainless steel, heat treatment is applied to a stainless steel in an oxidizing controlled atmospheric gas to form an oxide film composed essentially of Fe on the surface of the stainless steel and then the oxide film composed essentially of Fe formed on the surface of the stainless steel is removed by etching using water-containing halogen gas or halogen-generating gas to form an oxide film composed essentially of Cr on the surface.;COPYRIGHT: (C)2001,JPO
