PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To enhance a productivity by attaching a pivotable shutter self- containing a torque limiter to a paper feed shaft and returning a waiting manuscript inclined during conveying the uppermost manuscript to a normal position by a reverse rotation of the paper feed shaft. ;SOLUTION: When driving an automatic paper feeder, a pivotable shutter 38 is clockwise rotated and raised accompanying with a rotation of a paper feed shaft 16. Simultaneously, a paper feed roller 18 is clockwise rotated to descend a pivotable arm 20 and a turn over roller 22 is rotated to turn over a manuscript. Of the manuscript turned over, the uppermost manuscript 50 is only permitted to advance in a manuscript traveling direction between the paper feed roller 18 and a separation roller 24 and a subsequent manuscript 52 is pushed back by the separation roller 24. When the uppermost manuscript 50 is passed through the paper feed roller 18, the paper feed shaft 16 is counterclockwise rotated and the pivotable arm 20 is raised to left the turn over roller 22 from the manuscript. Simultaneously, the pivotable shutter 38 is counterclockwise rotated and the subsequent manuscript 52 inclined during feeding of the uppermost manuscript 50 is pushed back to the original state.;COPYRIGHT: (C)2001,JPO
