PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method by which a spot (difficult measuring spot), such as the nonreflecting spot, defuse reflection spot, etc., which is difficult to be measured with a distance and angle measuring instrument (TS) can be measured by setting a virtual line, etc., which connects between the virtual coordinates of first and second observation points.;SOLUTION: The horizontal angle and vertical or inclined angle to an aimed observation point PO can be measured by utilizing the angle measuring function of a TS, but the distance measuring function of the TS utilizing optical transmission-reception is not able to be utilized. However, when the observation point PO exists on a virtual vertical plane connecting distance-measurable first and second observation points P1 and P2, the horizontal angles and vertical or inclined angles to the points P1 and P2 cab be measured by utilizing the angle measuring function of the TS. In addition, the inclined distances SD1 and SD2 to the points P1 and P2 can also be measured by utilizing the distance measuring function of the TS. Therefore, when the virtual coordinates of the points P1 and P2 are found and a virtual line HL connecting the coordinates to each other is set, the aimed observation point PO can be measured by calculation under the condition that the point PO exists on a virtual vertical plane VS specified by the virtual line HL.;COPYRIGHT: (C)2001,JPO
