PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To shorten the cleaning period of time of a printing machine. SOLUTION: A press element 2 holds a cloth section 4 of a cleaning cloth 6 so as to move it toward or away from a soiled surface 8. A cleaning device has a pressure chamber 14 for applying pressure on the element 2 and an air pressure circuit to feed compressed air to the chamber 14 and to exhaust the chamber 14. The air pressure circuit includes a compressed air storage vessel 32 with a compressed air storage chamber 30. The chamber 30 is in communication with the chamber 14 of the element 2 to urge the element 2 to a contact position using the compressed air stored in the chamber 30. Or the chamber 30 is in communication with compressed air sources 22, 24 to recharge the chamber 30 with compressed air.
