PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a high temperature oxidation-resistant material and a heating element material, each of which comprises a base material consisting of or consisting essentially of MoSi2 excellent in embrittlement resistance and durability, by controlling minute contents of free Si and Mo5Si3. SOLUTION: Each of these materials comprises an MoSi2 base material or base material which consists essentially of MoSi2 or more specifically, contains =70 wt.% MoSi2, wherein diffraction intensity of the Si main peak [2=28.440 deg., from the JCPDS(joint committee on powder diffraction standards) data file] of X-ray diffraction (using a Cu X-ray tube and the Cu K characteristic radiation) of such a base material is =1/100 of that of the MoSi2 main peak (2=44.684 deg., from the JCPDS data file) of X-ray diffraction of the base material and also, diffraction intensity of the Mo5Si3 main peak (2=38.405 deg., from the JCPDS data file) is 1/300 to 1/10 of that of the MoSi2 main peak (2=44.684 deg.).
