PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To expand bit map data at high speed by extracting curved line data expressing the curved line part of a contour from acquired contour information, and expanding these curved line data as straight line data. SOLUTION: A memory 32 stores a contour information expansion program 32a and a condition table 32b. The condition table 32b stores the size, character code range or handwriting style of bit map data as a condition for determining whether or not additional information is to be utilized for expanding the contour information. By running the contour information expansion program stored in the memory 32, a CPU 33 expands an outline font stored in a font ROM 31. In such expanding processing, when the contour information to be expanded satisfies the condition in the condition table 32b, the CPU 33 expands the contour while regarding the curved line part as a straight line according to the additional information added to the contour information included in the outline font.
