PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To accurately detect the road surface slope at a low cost by a road surface slope detector. ;SOLUTION: This road surface slope detector is provided with a neutral detecting means 1 detecting the neutral state of a transmission, an actual acceleration detecting means 5 detecting an actual acceleration α of a vehicle, at detecting it to be neutral, a theoretical acceleration calculating means 6 calculating a theoretical acceleration α0 when a vacant vehicle is traveling on a flat road in the neutral state, a slope loading calculating means 7 calculating a slope loading α1L from the deviation between the actual acceleration α and the theoretical acceleration α0, and a gradient calculating means 8 calculating a slope θ of the traveling road surface of the vehicle in the neutral state according to the equation sinθ=-α1L/g, based on the slope loading α1L and the acceleration of gravity (g).;COPYRIGHT: (C)2001,JPO
