PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a new catalyst system having good selectivity at the beginning of reaction, high total productivity and a long service life of the catalyst itself.;SOLUTION: The catalyst system consists of vanadium oxide, bismuth oxide and a magnesium-base carrier and attains the oxidative dehydrogenation of an alkyl aromatic (particularly ethylbenzene) or a paraffin to the corresponding alkenyl aromatic (particularly styrene) or the corresponding olefin. Vanadium expressed as V2O5 occupies 1-15 wt.%, preferably 2-10 wt.% of the total amount (100 wt.%) of the catalyst system, bismuth expressed as Bi2O3 occupies 2-30 wt.%, preferably 5-25 wt.% and the carrier occupies the balance.;COPYRIGHT: (C)2001,JPO
