In the present invention there is disclosed a device for reading an information carrier (1) on which an information pattern is recorded in the form of substantially parallel running tracks of readable effects (21, 22), the device comprising: a read head (3) for generating a read signal (10) by scanning the information carrier (1) at a scanning position (13), servo tracking means (7) for keeping the scanning position (13) on the track, and discriminating means (9) for determining a type of the information carrier (1), whereby the information pattern has at least one different physical parameter for each type of the information carrier(1).
