This invention relates to an improved catalyst comprising a carbon carrier having a noble metal on its surface for use in the catalysis of liquid-phase oxidation reactions, especially in an acidic oxidizing environment and in the presence of solvents, reagents, intermediates or products that dissolve the noble metals; and also concerns a method for producing an improved catalyst; a liquid phase oxidation process using such a catalyst, where the catalyst exhibits improved leaching resistance of the noble metal, especially in acidic oxidizing environments and in the presence of solvents, reagents, intermediates or products that dissolve the noble metals; and a liquid phase oxidative process in which N- (phosphonomethyl) iminodiacetic acid ("PMIDA") is oxidized to form N- (phosphonomethyl) glycine (i.e., "glyphosate") or its salt using a catalyst that increases the oxidation of by-products formaldehyde and formic acid to carbon dioxide and water.
