A vegetable or a fruit is rotated, after which an impactor element is brought into contact with the surface of the rotated vegetable or fruit a number of times. The impact of the element is measured in order to determine the hardness of the vegetable or fruit over at least a portion of the surface. Independent claims are also included for the following: (a) a device for determining the hardness of a vegetable or fruit; (b) a brush roller.
