Compounds and compositions for delivering lower amounts of biologically or chemically active agents to animals while still achieving the same blood levels and therapeutic effects

Carrier compounds (193) and compositions useful in the delivery of one or more biologically or chemically active agents are described. The carrier compound can be an amino acid derivative, and the active agent can be a peptide, mucopolysaccharide, carbohydrate, or lipid. Methods of administration and preparation are also described. The carrier compounds are well suited to form non-covalent mixtures with biologically active agents for oral administration to animals. It has been found that with some biologically or chemically active agents, the use of the carriers disclosed provides efficient delivery, in oral, intranasal, sublingual, intraduodenal, rectal, vaginal, buccal, ophthalmic, or subcutaneous systems as well as systems for crossing the blood/brain barrier. Therefore, lower amounts of the biologically or chemically active agent than those used in prior dosage unit forms or delivery systems can be administered to the subject, while still achieving the same blood levels and therapeutic effects.
