A piston-cylinder device (2) which can be moved in a vertical direction relative to a support is designed to compress the patients sternum. The piston (4) has a stroke length defined by two stoppers (6, 13). A device is provided for moving one of the stoppers a pre-determined length into a first position for giving the compression stroke length, and into a second position for giving the decompression stroke length, which is greater than the compression stroke length.
