An assumed pure delay (m) is incremented until a preset filter coefficient dependent function exceeds a threshold function that depends on an apriori probability P(m) where m coefficients represent only pure delay. The pure delay is represented by smallest integer mSTART that makes the decision function exceed the threshold function. The pure delay (m) is a positive integer representing an offset of m filter coefficients into echo path impulse response estimate. An Independent claim is also included for the system for calculating pure echo delay estimate of echo path.
