The two-compartment refrigeration unit has a compressor, condenser and two evaporators in series to provide a freezer temperature in one compartment and a refrigerator temperature in the main compartment. A temperature sensor in the main compartment switches the compressor on and off for a period determined by a microprocessor unit, depending upon the main compartment and ambient temperatures. The refrigerator (2) compartment and the freezer (1) compartment are cooled to the required temperatures by evaporator sections (3,7) of a refrigeration circuit, which is controlled by a microprocessor unit (6) and a thermostat (5) in the main compartment (2), which registers the actual air temperature. This is compared with a reference temperature by the control unit, to determine the run-time of the compressor.
