A sustained release bolus composition,containing a prophylactically effective amount of acompound selected from LL-F28249.alpha., 23-(O-methyloxime)-LL-F28249.alpha. and derivatives thereof provides a methodfor protecting ruminant animals for a prolonged periodof time against infestation by nematodes, acarids andendo- and ectoparasitic insects, and which over timecan also eliminate the initial population of parasitespresent at treatment.The invention also relates to a method forthe systemic control of ectoparasitic insect infestationsof ruminant animals by orally administering tosaid animals a sustained release bolus containing aninsecticidally effective amount of LL-F28249.alpha.,23-(O-methyloxime)LL-F28249.alpha. or derivative thereof,which continuously releases into the rumen of thetreated animal a systemically effective amount ofLL-F28249.alpha., 23-(O-methyloxime)LL-F28249.alpha. or derivativethereof.
