METHOD OF MANUFACTURING DIAMOND-COATED CUTTING TOOL INSERTS AND PRODUCT RESULTING THEREFROM

A method of making a diamond coated insert includes,obtaining a substrate of durable and diamond adherent materialhaving a substantially smooth surface on which is coated adiamond layer using any known CVD technique, and partitioning thediamond covered substrate with a laser beam into multiple insertswith desired geometries. If desired, the insert edges andcorners may be thereafter machined or ablated until the desiredsmoothness and finish are achieved, and a fastening throughboremay be preformed or drilled in the center of each insert. Thediamond coated inserts as formed have a top surface entirelycoated by a surface layer of diamond of a first thickness, and atleast one rake face which is not diamond coated beyond thesurface layer of diamond.
