Harmonics coefficients are estimated inprimary coefficients of an orthogonal transform of aspeech input signal or a music input signal by using apitch frequency extracted from the input signal and arequantized into a harmonics code vector. Residuecoefficients are calculated by removing the harmonicscoefficients from the primary coefficients and quantizedinto residue code vectors.and gain code vectors. It ispossible to search harmonics excitation pulses at theharmonics locations for harmonics quantization into theharmonics code vector. On the other hand, it ispossible to estimate the harmonics coefficients orexcitation pulses by using quantized LSP parameters andto calculate secondary coefficients for use in weightingthe harmonics quantization and residue quantization and,if applicable, in an excitation pulse search.
