ASPHALTIC COMPOSITIONS CONTAINING FIBROUS MATERIALS WITH IMPROVED RESISTANCE TO TEMPERATURE DEGRADATION

A method is described for the modification of asphalticcompositions such that cellolosic fibers are not degraded bythe asphalt at elevated temperatures. This is achieved bythe addition of addition of certain inorganic or organicalkaline materials to the composition. As a furtherembodiment of the invention, a method is also described forthe dispersion of cellulosic fibers in liquid asphalt in sucha way as to obtain a thermally stable product with definedviscoelastic properties. This comprises blending the fiberswith asphalt, fibers and alkaline additives under controlledmixing conditions such that the required viscometricspecification is attained.
