The present invention relates to a novel cytoplasmic male sterile (CMS)Brassica napus plant containing improved 'oxy' cytoplasm i.e. chloroplast fromBrassica oleracea and recombinant mitochondria from Brassica oxyrrhina, aprocess for developing the said 'oxy' CMS Brassica napus plants by usinghexaploid 'oxy' CMS Brassica plants, obtained through somatic hybridization,as the bridging material and back-crossing these for at least five generationsto transfer the novel 'oxy' CMS character to Brassica napus plants and amethod for producing the improved hexaploid male sterile 'oxy' CMS Brassicaplants mediated through protoplast fusion and regeneration of the somatichybrids and to the transfer of this improved 'oxy' cytoplasm to tetraploidBrassica napus (AACC) plants through conventional back-cross breeding for fivegenerations.
