It is found out that monosodium 5,6-O-benzylidene-L-ascorbate (SBA), which is a known compound having a low toxicity, is capable of inhibiting the proliferation and migration of vascular endothelial cells enhanced by growth factors such as vascular endothelial cell growth factor and/or fibroblast growth factor and thus inhibits neovascularization. SBA inhibits neovascularization enhanced by abnormality in the eye and, in its turn, suppresses the resulting lesion in the eye. Moreover, it inhibits abnormal neovascularization in a cancer tissue and around the same, thereby inhibiting the proliferation and metastasis of the cancer. Further, SBA inhibits neovascularization enhanced in a lesion of articular rheumatism and thus relieves the pain caused by rheumatism. The above-described SBA is useful as a novel neovascularization inhibitor having an excellent effect of inhibiting neovascularization and an extremely low toxicity.
