A method for controlling the growth of microorganisms in a standing water system comprises adding a sodium carbonate peroxyhydrate composition. The method is particularly useful in treating polybiguanide-treated standing water systems and when converting a standing water system from chlorine- or bromine-based treatment to biguanide-based treatment.
