The invention relates to a method and an installation for synthesising methanol from hydrogen, carbon monoxide and carbon dioxide under pressure, in particular, in order to increase the yields of methods which are already used. According to said method, desulphurized natural gas is supplied to a reformer and the resultant synthesis gas is subjected to a methanol synthesis. With this method the invention aims to expand the known method to such an extent, that the identified disadvantages are overcome, additional equipment can be fitted to the existing installations quickly and easily and a foreign synthesis gas can be used. To this end, a side stream from the synthesis gas stream is supplied to a methanol pre-reactor once the synthesis gas has passed through the reformer, the methanol produced in the pre-reactor is supplied to the methanol stream which has been produced from the methanol synthesis of the main stream and a synthesis gas stream which has not been converted in the methanol pre-reactor is resupplied to the main stream before the latter undergoes the methanol synthesis. At the same time, an additional synthesis gas is delivered to the resupply area, in order to compensate for the amount which has been lost.
