A method of optical coherent transient signal processing to generate a signal (10) having a variable time delay, by applying a pattern optical pulse (40), a first and second frequency-shifted, chirped optical pulse (20, 30), and a data optical pulse (50) to the optical absorbing medium (100), whereby each pulse is incident to the absorbing medium at a same spatial location and at a different incident angle, whereby an output signal is emitted from the absorbing medium after a time delay that is variable according to an amount of frequency-shifting of the chirped optical pulses.
