The invention relates to a system used in a laboratory or production unit allowing safe working conditions both for personnel and products, said system comprising an isolator in which the corresponding items are treated, examined, packaged etc. Safety workplaces of the highest safety level are designed such that the item to be treated is introduced into an isolator that is closed all around and that can only be manipulated via gloves that are firmly fixed in the isolator wall. For an entire treatment process, however, it is often necessary to transport the items treated or to be treated from one working area to the isolator or from the isolator to another working area, which is not without danger. The safety of a system used in a laboratory or production unit can be increased by providing the isolator (1) in a gas-tight combination with at least one other add-on unit that is used to store or treat the item to be worked during a defined length of time. The add-on unit(s) is/are accessible by means of firmly inserted gloves (7) and the isolator (1) is interlinked with the add-on unit(s) and optionally the add-on units are interlinked with one another by hatches.
