The present invention includes nucleic acids and their encoded polypeptides related to novel mammalian renal NADPH oxidases, and uses of these nucleic acids and polypeptides. The invention includes therapeutic compositions related to the novel mammalian renal NADPH oxidases, expression vectors containing the nucleic acids, and transformed cell lines containing the expression vectors. The invention includes methods for treating a patient with therapeutic compositions related to the novel mammalian renal NADPH oxidases and methods for producing the polypeptides of the invention. The invention includes assays for discovering compounds that effect the function of proteins encoded by the novel mammalian renal NADPH oxidase nucleic acids of the invention. The invention provides a method for treating or preventing cancer, hypertension, inflammatory kidney diseases, and infections of the urinary tract, and a method for treating a patient afflicted with polycythemia. The invention also provides a method for determining the sequence of a mammalian renal NADPH oxidases gene in a sample.
