Disclosed is a circuit for generating voltage pulses and impressing voltage pulses upon a fuel cell. The voltage pulses are produced in a pulse generator (30). The pulse generator is connected to a charge/discharge circuit (11, 12) provided with at least one fuel cell (51) and at least one capacitor (13) by means of a circuit consisting of a driver element (21) and two transistors (22, 23). According to the adjustment of the circuit, the charge/discharge circuit can act as a pure charge circuit (11) or a pure discharge circuit (12) in relation to the capacitor. When the charge/discharge circuit acts as a charge circuit, the voltage pulses are impressed upon the fuel cell, resulting in modification of the fuel cell potential and oxidization of the harmful concentration of carbon monoxide in the fuel cell. The electric charges thus released can be temporarily stored in the capacitor (13). When the circuit is reversed, the capacitor can be discharged and the energy can be used for a load (14). The duration and distance of the voltage pulses can also be varied by the pulse generator.
