PURPOSE: A robot and an operation method thereof are provided to recognize a planar structure of a space and to move to a desired position by supplying a record medium. CONSTITUTION: An action direction detective unit(113) has an electronic compass to detect a process direction of a present robot body. The action direction detective unit detects an action direction through the electronic compass upon a demand of a microprocessor(119). The detected action direction is transferred to the microprocessor through an interface(116). The microprocessor stores the action direction detection value in a RAM(117) and a ROM(118). Then, the microprocessor uses the value upon analysis of a planar structure or generation of a direction error.
