PURPOSE: A disinfectant comprising cetylpyridinium chloride showing excellent sterilizing effect against causative bacteria of food poisoning completely different from bacteria being present in the mouth and detergent containing the same are provided which have low toxicity and have excellent bactericidal power against various bacteria. CONSTITUTION: The cetylpyridinium chloride, which has been used as mouthwash compositions has strong bactericidal power against low temperature bacteria, medium temperature bacteria, heat resistant bacteria, Escherichia coli, Enterococcus, Vibrio parahaemolyticus, Salmonella typhimurium, Staphylococcus, Escherichia coli O157:H7, Stapylococcus aureus, Clostridium perfringens, Listeria monocytogenes, is used as a bactericidal agent and added to detergent. The detergent containing the compound exhibits not only very high cleaning effects but also bactericidal power.
