PURPOSE: A novel lignan glycoside, Hibiscuside is provided which exhibits a good antioxidant activity therefore, strongly inhibits a lipid peroxidation of microsome isolated from rat liver and which is able to produce unknown compounds such as new type of the lignan glycoside or lignan agricon by modifying the structure thereof. CONSTITUTION: The lignan glycoside, (+)-pinoresinol 4-O-(beta-glucopyranosyl(12)-alpha-rhamnoside) named as Hibiscuside is represented by a formula (1). The lignan glycoside (+)-pinoresinol 4-O-(beta-glucopyranosyl(12)-alpha-rhamnoside) is isolated and purified by the following steps of : grinding the root of Hibiscus sp. tree and sequentially extracting with methanol, chloroform, ethyl acetate and buthanol; carrying out an adsorption chromatography using a column packed with HP-20 resin followed by eluting with methanol to obtain the material of yellow oil phase; carrying out again the adsorption chromatography using a column packed with Sephadex LH 20 resin; harvesting an active fraction exhibiting an inhibition activity of lipid peroxidation using DPPH reagent; carrying out an HPLC equipped with ODS column.
