PURPOSE: A hermetic rotary compressor is provided to achieve an improved reliability by reducing pressure pulse noise caused during the procedure of refrigerant gas suction, compression and discharge, while improving efficiency of compression power required for refrigerant gas compression. CONSTITUTION: A hermetic rotary compressor comprises a rotation shaft having an eccentric part and which rotates by the driving force from a motor unit; a rolling piston(9) inserted into the eccentric part of the rotation shaft; a cylinder(5) having an inner space for insertion of the rolling piston and a space formed between the inner periphery of the cylinder and the outer periphery of the rolling piston; upper and lower bearings coupled to the cylinder, respectively, and which seal the inner space of the cylinder and supports the rotation shaft; and a vane(10) penetrating the peripheral wall of the cylinder so as to reciprocate in linear fashion, and which is coupled to the outer periphery of the rolling piston and converts the space of the cylinder into a suction area(a) and a compression area(b) in accordance with the rotation of the rotation shaft. The cylinder has a surge groove(20) formed within the closed inner space, such that the surge groove has a surge volume corresponding to 0.5% to 2% of the total volume of the inner space of the cylinder.
