Temporary wet strength compositions for use in polymer and paper products, such as toilets, are disclosed. The transient wet strength polymer is an oxidation product of an esterified polyhydroxy polymer, more preferably an esterified polysaccharide. The esterified polymer compound is prepared by reacting a 1,2-disubstituted alkene compound having at least one carboxylic acid group with a polyhydroxy polymer. Temporary wet strength polymers provide a paper product having an initial wet strength and an appropriate wet strength decay rate that enable the product to be used under wet conditions.
