Method and system for preventing confusion of similar phrases into lexicon of speech recognition system

A method and system are provided for preventing the input of confusing similar phrases 60 in the lexical list 10 of a speaker dependent speech recognition system. The method first receives (20, 30, 50) and registers the phrase (60) to add to the lexical list (10). Next, probabilities 62 are assigned to all phrases 12. The probabilities 62 assigned to phrases that already exist are greater than the probability 64 assigned to the phrase 62 that the user wishes to add. The added phrase 60 is secondarily received and compared with a modified lexicon 61 containing the first received phrase 60. Next, the method indicates whether the second received phrase matches one phrase 12, 14, 16 on the modified lexical list 61 other than the first received phrase 60.
