Electronic devices capable of transmitting data at two or more different data rates include a transmission circuit, a cable connection mechanism, and an isolation transformer having a primary winding and a secondary winding. The transmit circuitry low pass filters the digital data that the transmit circuit transmits to the primary winding at a first data rate. The transmitting circuit is also different from the first data rate and generally transmits digital data to the primary winding at a larger second data rate. The cable connection mechanism provides output data from the secondary winding to the communication cable. Importantly, the transmitting circuit is operable to generate a current source data signal at two data rates to convert the current source signal into an impedance generating voltage signal constituting the output data. The current source amplifying circuit normally generates a current source signal. The impedance circuit then converts the current source signal into output data.
