The optical monitoring system uses a light path or light barrier device (20,21,22), for detecting the position of the movable switch bolt (3), with a monitoring signal provided in one or both switch positions of the latter. The light path or light barrier device may have a single light source (20) and a pair of photodetectors (21,22) respectively providing a monitoring signal when the switch bolt is in the 'off' or 'on' position.
