The protection device is used during the setting period of the concrete component. A heating or cooling mat (8) is fitted in the immediate vicinity of the external surfaces of the component. This mat may be in the form of a capillary tube mat (9) through which a heating or cooling medium flows. The capillary tube mat may consist of a number of plastics capillary tubes (24) laid alongside each other and connected to each other to form the mat. The capillary tube mat may be in the form of two plastics sheets welded to each other to form the capillary tubes.
