The electric wheelchair drive with devices for climbing steps for attachment to wheelchairs of conventional construction has each of the two large wheels provided with tire grips driven by an electric motor (1) and a gearbox via a gear wheel (9) of large diameter and internal teeth connected to the driving wheel rim and a drive head. The latter is formed from a pinion (11) running in the gear teeth and a counter-roller (17) ensuring the tooth engagement between pinion and gear, connected with it to a stiff unit. Each driving wheel is provided on its whole periphery with cams (33) located at the same distance from one another which can be extended for step-climbing next to the rubber tires of the driving wheel, concentric to the axle, and can be retracted again for horizontal movement. They are located so that on a step with extended cams, the rubber tire lying freely in the intermediate space between the individual cams can come into pressure contact with the step edge projecting in between two adjacent cams.
