A series of magnetic resonance recordings are taken to extract location resolved MR signals. The phase shifts of the MR signals caused by the magnetic field changes due to the electrical activity of nerve cells, are determined. The phase shifts are correlated with events causing the electrical activity to evaluate the event dependent phase shifts of the MR signals. The electrical activity of the nerve cells is triggered by external stimulation according to a stimulation function. The phase shifts caused by the stimulation are identified by time correlation of the phase shifts with the stimulation function.
