Preparing a device (I) with a functional hydrogel surface comprises binding organic molecules of 8 atoms in length with a terminal rest (A) that is an amine rest, carbonic acid group or their derivatives, and reacting the terminal rest with a receptor group of three similar rests (B) that are an amine rest carbonic acid group, a sulfonic acid rest, a phosphoric acid rest or their derivatives. Independent claims are also included for the following: (1) preparing (I) comprising: (a) providing a device with a hydrogel on its surface; (b) binding (A) to the hydrogel; and (c) reacting the terminal groups of (A) with receptor molecules; and (2) using (I).
