Assay for determining the mitogenic or antimitogenic potential of a substance or environmental condition comprises exposing cells to the substance or condition and determining the proportions of cells in the G1 to S, G2 and M phases of the cell cycle using monoclonal antibodies that recognize the different phases. An Independent claim is also included for a kit for performing the assay, comprising a cell culture adjusted to a predetermined ratio of cell fractions.
